CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The NAACP is looking for more members in the Coastal Bend. It is holding a membership drive and hopes to have 5,000 members soon.
The organization believes in diversity, community service and creating new leaders. This year's activities were on hold due to the pandemic. But, the president of the organization Terry Mills wants to let the community know they are open to all people of color.
Mills says the organization is open to all people of color.
“And an organization that believes in working with the community not against,” said Mills.
Mills shares that the founding fathers realized that people come in all colors and that the organization is for everyone to join.
“Hispanic people, Anglo people, African-American people, Jewish people so on and so forth,” said Mills.
Latina Rosie Collin believes the organization does a great service to the Coastal Bend. It’s part of why she’s been a member for the last 10 years.
“I am proud to be apart of this organization that is vibrant and that is vital to the legacy of our city and our community,” Collin said.
The NAACP has educated thousands of people about the importance of their health at local health fairs.
It has also educated the community on Black History Month by going to centers, schools and talking to the kids and community about Black professionals that might have been excluded in some history books. This inspired Collin to work even more with the organization.
“The NAACP to me represents all of us who want to see social justice, education, and health programs that are relevant, especially in these times,” said Collin.
Collin says that this group is looking to develop young leaders and to teach its members a little more about themselves.
“It brings you greater pride in your city, in your community," she said. "Because you are engaged in work that is meaningful to the community.”
The NAACP is hoping to have 5000 members by October 7th.
