MUSTANG ISLAND — Mustang Island saw a large amount of debris washed ashore last weekend.
A cleanup was held Saturday morning to help rid the area of that debris.
Park officials say it was important to immediately clean up the area to avoid having the trash buried in the sand if the winds were to pick up.
“It is great,” Mustang Island Park interpreter Eric Ehrlich said. “They get a sense of fulfillment, animals don’t have a voice. We are their voice. We're here helping support that.”
The work was grimy, but rewarding.
“It was pretty dirty,” South Texas master naturalist Michelle Alvarez said. “A lot of bottle caps, straws and a couple of lighters here and there.”
About 100 volunteers showed up today to help.
And according to park officials, Hurricane Hanna pushed a lot of sand onto the roadway and destroyed a lot of sand dunes.
