CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Members of the track team at one local high school say they are thankful for a donation from Fleet Feet Corpus Christi.

You get a pair, you get a pair, you get a pair. Seventy-five pairs of new track spike shoes were donated to the Foy Moody High School track team by the shoe store.

“It was like Christmas," said Evelyn Reyes, Moody's volleyball and assistant track coach. "Me and my head coach opened them and we were like, 'oh my gosh.'"

Mari Pena, owner of Fleet Feet Corpus Christi, said the donation was prompted by a surplus of track spikes. She contacted Reyes, a high school friend, asking if her team could use them. Within a week, five big boxes of spikes were donated.

“I wanted to help out and I knew track season was coming up and a lot of families have been hit hard so they’re not able to get the extras that they need,” Pena said.

Reyes says there are families that cannot afford track spikes. Some of the kids run in shoes not meant for the sport. Last year, their head coach bought shoes out of her own pocket so the kids could run.

“So this is definitely going to help across the board for all of our athletes,” Reyes said.

Moody track team member Lidia Lowe said she is thankful for Fleet Feet donating the shoes to her school, providing them a chance to chase their dreams.

“That was just a big relief off of my shoulders, my coaches' shoulders, and my mom and dad’s shoulders,” said Lowe, a senior for the Lady Trojans. "Because (at) Moody we sometimes do need a little bit of help and that was so amazing for them to do,"

Reyes said there are enough pairs of shoes for everyone. The track season begins in February.
