CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Members of the American Cancer Society hosted their 12th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
But due to the pandemic, the event had a few differences from past years.
“Cancer doesn't stop because of COVID and so neither are we,” said Kayla Hanson, the local American Cancer Society's senior community development manager.
The event took place at La Palmera Mall where several cars were lined up in support.
“We’ve been working overnight and even though we didn’t have a lot of sleep, we’re still out here supporting,” said Annabell Garza.
For the 2020 event, the organization provided a scavenger hunt for participants to complete in their vehicles.
“No one fights alone," event participant Carla Gonzalez said. "We have family members that have been diagnosed with cancer, too, They’re fighting it. We have love members that have passed away ... so this is our way to honor and respect them and show that we’re apart from them."
Those who took part in the scavenger hunt stopped at different locations around the city, including Herrman & Herrman, P.L.L.C., the Walmart on Staples, Humana Insurance and more.
“I have aunts that are breast cancer survivors, so I like to participate every year,” Garza said.
Organizers say their event and others help provide an impact and show the community can fight together to end cancer.
“You know it doesn’t affect just women it affects men," Hanson said. "Cancer doesn’t discriminate and so it’s just so very important that we ban together and we come together and fight so we can put an end to this awful disease."
