KINGSVILLE, Texas — Some whiz kids from around the area were showing off their engineering skills at Texas A&M-Kingsville today.

The university hosted middle and high school students who were taking part in the school’s annual engineering week competition.

The different teams had to create an electric catapult that shoots a tiny ball through a straw.

“Before you shot it you are supposed turn this on,” student Claudia Lujalo said. “And then, it’ll, I guess, heat it up. The screw and then it'll make the screw push out the ball.”

College officials hope events like this will inspire the next generation of engineers.
