CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A local law firm has filed a motion to request a Nueces County judge to have its first civil jury trial via a video conference meeting.

The case surrounds an incident at a Walmart after a crane collapsed in the parking lot back in 2017.

The incident happened March 23, 2017, outside the Walmart on Greenwood and SPID. Shoppers and some employees at a Walmart store had to be evacuated after a crane fell over.

On the night of the incident, Michael Schmidt, a battalion chief with the Corpus Christi Fire Department, said the crane's operators dug into the ground and asphalt, and for whatever reason it gave way and it teetered off to the side.

Attorneys on behalf of the crane operator said their client was paralyzed after a fall from the crane and want to proceed with a Zoom jury trial.

The hearing for granting the motion for having a civil jury trial is set for Thursday in the Nueces County Court at Law No. 4.

If approved, the first Zoom trial will take place on Oct. 5.
