CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — It’s that time of year when parents are getting their children ready to go back to school, but some families cannot afford supplies.

Every year, KRIS 6, along with the United Way of the Coastal Bend and H-E-B, collect school supplies for those who otherwise can’t afford it.

And if you still want to donate, today is your last day to do so before the goods are distributed.

There are some ways you can still help: When you check out at an area H-E-B store, look for the KRIS 6 tear pads and choose an amount that works for you. You can also go online to donate or text "SOS" to 91-999 to make a donation via text message.

"It is so important, because we have almost 60,000 children in our community who need help with some basic school supplies," said United Way of the Coastal Bend President Libby Averyt. "We are not talking about anything fancy, just paper, pens, glue sticks, and things like that. And we are only able to reach about 10,000 or 11,000 of those students."

And 100 percent of all the proceeds raised will go to purchase the school supplies needed.

It’s a reality that can leave children feeling embarrassed when they show up for the first day of school empty-handed.

Every child, regardless of their family situation or their financial situation, should have the same level playing field when they go to school.

With your help, thousands of kids will start the schoolyear off right.
