CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — For more than 60 years, the Coastal Bend Labor Council has held an annual Labor Day breakfast to mark the start of the local political season.
Because of COVID-19, there was no breakfast this year but union members and some volunteers still gathered at the union hall on Saratoga this morning to man a drive-thru book giveaway.
“Literacy is the foundation of every subject so the fact that they're supporting in our community, it's just tremendous,” local teacher Natalia Johnson said.
Teacher Ashley Hernandez agreed of the importance of promoting reading.
“As an educator I just feel that reading is very important,” Hernandez said. “So if I can get books to read to my two sons, it's amazing.”
The labor council partnered with a group called "First Book" to make this giveaway possible.
A total of 800 books for every reading level from elementary to young adult were given away this morning.
