CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Folks in Kleberg County are remembering a longtime lawman in those parts former Sheriff Adan Munoz.

He died Saturday, and a viewing was held in his honor Tuesday at J.K. Northway Coliseum.

Munoz served as Kleberg County sheriff from 1988-94 and during his tenure, he created the first South Texas narcotics task force.

"I believe he was meant to be the tip of the sphere," said current Kleberg Co. Sheriff Richard Kirkpatrick. "That was the first and last line of defense in an organization that had never been created. To look back today, that unit so successful is still there and full operation today is quite a testament."

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church.

Munoz was 71 years old.
