CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A church located out on the island is helping alleviate food insecurities among students.

Volunteers gathered at the Island in the Son United Methodist Church today to assemble food bags for area students.

The program is called "Feed the Kids" and it was started by a pair of retired Flour Bluff teachers.

"What it is … we feed the kids that normally get all their meals at school and don't have anything to eat at home on the weekends or not much. So what we were doing was when school was in session, we were filling these bags of food and sending them home with one on the weekends so they would have something to eat ,” Feed the Kids volunteer Karen Poynter said.

The volunteers wanted to keep the program going though schools have been closed for nearly two months.

They've organiezed a curbside pickup scheduled for Friday.

To help pay for the food, members of the church host fundraisers like barbecues or collect cans throughout the year.
