CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The season of giving is upon us again, and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is joining thousands of organizations across the globe that will partner with local nonprofit organizations to celebrate Giving Tuesday on Dec. 3.
Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 to encourage people to donate, to fundraise, or volunteer their time.
On the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, the faculty and staff at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will be doing just that -- donating their time throughout the community.
“And so it started 6 years ago,” said A&M-CC Associate Vice President/Dean of Students Ann Degaish. "We had 44 people join us, and this year we are at 24 locations, and we have 388 people registered to participate in it ."
The annual event encourages people to be charitable after indulging in Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. And for many of them it opens their eyes to giving back.
“We see people get out from their offices, and they get involved with these agencies for just a small snippet of time, and what we have learned over the years, they continued to volunteer at some of those agencies,” said Degaish.
Many nonprofit organizations will be looking for volunteers to help them carry out their mission on this day.
“It is really fabulous,” said Degaish. "The organizations are so thankful for assistance and sometimes -- particularly some of the smaller ones are not always thought of -- and so we really try to hit some of those groups as well to give them some exposure, and to find somebody that may want to continue to give their time to them in the future."
The day allows the university to support those who support them.
“The university receives so much from the local community in ways of support,” said Degaish. "A lot of our students are out there using our agencies and getting assistance to make it through school, and we just felt like it was really important that we gave back to them for once."
Giving Tuesday is a day when people come together in an effort to help others kick off the holiday season.
