CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Freddie Records was founded in Corpus Christi in November 1969.

Today, the city council issued a proclamation declaring a month-long 50th anniversary celebration for the company.

Freddie Martinez Sr. and his wife began Freddie Records in their home.

Since then, some of the biggest names in Tejano and Conjunto music have recorded on the Freddie Records label.

Freddie Martinez is also a legendary performer.

He’s a six-time Grammy and Latin Grammy-winning artist, producer and songwriter.

But of all the honors he's received, he says today's proclamation by the city holds a special place.

“It's special because we're from Corpus Christi and being recognized here in our hometown is special for us,” he said. “We've been recognized in other cities and other states but this one is special for us because we're here in Corpus Christi.”

Freddie Martinez and Freddie Records were also honored a couple of months ago during the Tejano National Convention.
