CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS — Today is not like any other first day of school for parents or students, as 25% of the students who choose in-person learning are welcomed onto campus for the first time since schools closed due to COVID-19, CCISD shares its back to school plan.

Chief of staff of CCISD, Kimberley James says they are excited to start welcoming back students for in-person learning and that the first day of school is going to be different this year.

“We are going to be observing all of the social distancing guidance that CDC and our health authorities haven given us ensuring our students are safe and they know how to follow good hygiene plan,” said James.

The school has provided face shields for staff and are requiring students to wear their masks while on campus.

“All of our classrooms have been given PPE such as hand sanitizer, hand gels, sprays, to make sure the rooms are clean,” said James.

But the district needs help, they say it is very important that parents and students are self screening at home and following the school districts protocol guidelines to ensure everyone's safety.

“Obviously if a teacher suspects or feels like somebody is not feeling good, we immediately send those students to an isolation station so that we are isolating students,” said James.

Through the school districts protocol, if a student or staff member tests positive they will not let them report to campus or school.

“They can return after 10 days have passed after the positive test result or symptom,” said James.

The public health director encourages parents to talk to their children and explain the importance of wearing a mask.

“And also explaining the importance of hand washing and how important that is going to be,” said Nueces County Public Health Director Annette Rodriguez.

Another simple safety measure is to make sure your child uses hand sanitizer upon pick up. Phase two begins September 21.
