Flour Bluff ISD has named Gregory Portland Asst. Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Velma Soliz-Garcia as the sole finalist for its superintendent job.

The search for the new superintendent began after the previous superintendent, David Freeman, died as a result of COVID-19-related complications in August.

The position is currently being filled by acting superintendent Joe Kelley.

Soliz-Garcia was announced as the finalist after a specially called board meeting Sunday.

Though she is the only finalist for the position, Texas state law requires that the district’s school board wait 21 days before the contract is signed and she is officially hired, it said in a release. She is expected to officially be named to the position Jan. 4, 2021.

She has 32 years of experience in education, and holds a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Education/Administration from A&M-Corpus Christi.
