CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Known for fluctuating weather this time of year, chilly temperatures are expected this week across the Coastal Bend along with cold nights in the 40s and 50s.

This means people will be staying indoors with their heaters on.

Great Air Heating and Air Conditioning is a local heater service that has been in business for 42 years.

Abey Flores, owner of Great Air Heating and Air Conditioning, says there are ways to ensure a home avoids any incidents involving a heating unit.

"Check the filters, check the burners, make sure the pilots are lit, make sure that the burners come off properly and they shut off properly," says Flores.

There are two types of heaters, a gas furnace or an electric furnace. A gas furnace should last anywhere from 10 to 15 years.

"In the wintertime, (we) go to a house where the temperature inside of the house is colder than it is outside and we go in there and repair it and get them up and running, keep their house nice and warm," said Flores.

Getting a unit serviced twice a year is crucial as it will help prevent unwanted repair calls, Flores says. Repairs should be done by a licensed contractor, he added.

For those who use space heaters, while they can be a convenient source of heat they can also pose fire and electric shock hazards.
