MATHIS, Texas — Two police horses are dead, and a driver was hurt following a crash on State Highway 359 north of Mathis.

According to San Patricio County Sheriff Oscar Rivera, a search team of dogs and mounted horses were deployed in the area around 7 Wednesday evening, after a driver fled from DPS following a routine traffic stop.

DPS, Parks & Wildlife, as well as the San Patricio County Sheriff's office were all involved in the search.

A green Ford Mustang struck two horses during the search, killing them.

No other officers or riders were injured during the incident, however, the driver of the Mustang was hurt.

Officials say the investigation, as well as the search for the initial driver who fled, are still ongoing.

It's unclear if the driver of the Mustang will face any charges.
