Culinary Kits for Kids

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS — This cooking class is already a big hit! So much so that the Culinary Kits for Kids registration has closed. However, that doesn't mean you can't participate.

The goal of the culinary kits for kids is to help kids explore their culinary skills at home, and it’s done virtually. The program is for kids ages 7 to 13 years old.

The kids will include a safety knife, cutting board, and ingredients. "Each kit will have a recipe in it that anyone can just follow along with,” said Coastal Bend Food Bank Nutrition Educator Manager Kate Hilliard.

But if you need additional help or inspiration cooking your family meal, "We are also going to have videos that are recording and demonstrating how to cook the ingredients in your bag,” said Hilliard.

The food will be natural and the ingredients will be enough for 2 to 4 servings depending on the recipe.

"In a kit, we would have most likely a recipe based around breakfast maybe an entree and then a side dish. So something that is promoting vegetables, whole grains, fruits,” said Hilliard.

4th grader Jordan Eason was able to sign up for the program. He says he already knows how to make pizza and cupcakes, but wants to learn more.

"Because I like to learn. Because my family is the best,” said Eason.

"This is a whole new world he can do a whole lot with this and once again this is something that he is very interested in. So, we want to cultivate that and see where that goes and I think he can make a career out of that,” said Jordan’s father Daryl Eason.

The CBFB hopes the program will also inspire kids to come together with their families to cook.

"What makes it personal and what makes it real is when we you get to actually taste it, smell it, chop it and I want to bring those experiences into the homes for these families,” said Hilliard.

The Coastal Bend Food Bank said you can still join in on the fun through their YouTube channel. That's where they will post videos of recipes that are made for the week. The videos will be posted the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month starting this month.
