Nueces County commissioners approved an agreement Wednesday that will lead to safer county beaches.
Under the agreement, the cities of Port Aransas and Corpus Christi will provide the county with additional lifeguards.
Precinct Four commissioner Brent Chesney, who spearheaded the effort, says county beaches haven't had lifeguards on duty since 2002.
Chesney said this agreement is just one part of an overall beach safety initiative.
"So be aware of the rip currents, be aware of the flags," he said. "We've got all kinds of warning systems out there: We have signs, We have flags, We have TxDOT signs. We're doing everything we can think of to do -- putting lifeguards out there -- but it really all comes down to you've got to be aware of your surroundings."
The lifeguards will be stationed at Magee Beach Park in Port Aransas and Padre Balli Park.
They should go on duty starting Friday.
