Nueces County Pct. 4 Constable Robert Sherwood has been indicted in a witness tampering case that dates back more than two years.

Sherwood is accused of coercing Adam Maldonado on March 23, 2018.

The indictment stems from a 2016 case in which Loye Snyder, a taxi driver in Port Aransas, reportedly was assaulted by by men riding in his taxi. Maldonado owns the taxi service for which Snyder drove.

An affadavit KRIS 6 News obtained at the time stated Snyder said Sherwood tried to bribe him into dropping the assault charges, asking after a series of phone calls and interactions.

Many of the reported interactions between Snyder and Sherwood were conducted through Maldonado, and the affadavit stated Sherwood, at one point, asked Maldonado if he had spoken with the Texas Rangers, who were investigating the case.

When Maldonado said no, Sherwood reportedly said "We're gonna have a conversation and you're gonna deny everything I tell you."

The indictment accuses Sherwood of trying to "influence Adam Maldonado to withhold information.

Sherwood won a runoff election against challenger Monty Allen in May to retain his seat. He is running unopposed in the general election.
