CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Another act of generosity happened in our community over at Zavala Elementary School.
Coast Guard Commander Jerry Butwid and his unit at Sector Air Station joined together to supply students with new backpacks.
They surpassed their initial goal and were able to hand out close to 100 backpacks to students.
It's something the commander and his staff enjoyed.
"We're here too. Our kids go to the schools here," the commander said. "We participate in all the same functions, shop at the same stores as y'all do. It's just our way of giving back to the community."
This was the first year the Coast Guard unit chipped in to donate backpacks and supplies. They said it won't be their last.
