CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi City Council has agreed to distribute funding from the CARES Act to area school districts.

The next step in the process Is for city representatives to meet with the Calallen, Tuloso-Midway and West Oso school districts to discuss the terms of the grant. It will help those districts supply laptops and WiFi hotspots to students who need them.

And once agreements are reached with the districts, those will have to be approved by the city.

Council members have also approved a $1 billion city budget for the second year in a row.

It addresses priorities like streets, public safety and parks.

Nearly $80 million will be allocated for street maintenance and reconstruction.

Money is also earmarked for the maintenance of concrete streets and a 14-mile makeover for Ocean Drive.

Public safety also gets a boost.

The budget will fund an additional five police officers.

And funding for fire cadet classes will allow the fire department to reach full strength for the first time in more than a decade.

The new budget also funds more hours for city library staff and adds two more compliance officers for code enforcement
