CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi’s latest class of police cadets is getting a taste of life on the street.

They were around City Hall this morning, working with the people they'll soon protect.

This week, cadets are learning some of the most important skills a police officer needs - communication and problem solving.

They'll need those skills when dealing with two big problems here in downtown - homelessness and drugs.

This morning, the cadets walked the beat with a survey in hand.

They asked what people downtown thought about those problems and how the police can help.

Instructors say the exercise instills the department's philosophy of community engagement in the cadets.

We’ll have more coming up this evening on KRIS 6 News.

This afternoon, the cadets head to La Palmera Mall where they'll ask people what they expect of new officers.
