A 28-year-old man is dead after he broke into a west side home.

According to Corpus Christi Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Mike Pena, officers were called to the 1300 block of 17th Street at 1:54 a.m. Wednesday. They were responding to a call of a burglary in progress.

When officers arrived, they forced their way into the home after hearing someone screaming inside. When they got in, they found the suspect was laying on the floor.

Witnesses told them the 28-year-old suspect broke into the home by breaking a window.

"He was saying to 'Open the f-ing door, now!' " said a female resident of the home who didn't want to be identified. "Just 'Open the door!' Open the door!' and then pounding really, really hard. Aggressively. But we didn't let him in."

The woman said she was in the house with her boyfriend, her mother, her grandmother and her three brothers. The family said when they heard the commotion, they ran to a back room. When they heard their 73-year-old grandmother scream from another room, three men ran into the room to confront the intruder.

"He hid in my brother's room," the female resident said. "I guess he was (intelligible) for us to come out and we didn't. So, that's when my grandma came out and said 'Hey, what are you doing?' That scared him. He went to go look for us, trying to hide and that's when we all came out."

One of the adult men grabbed a knife and stabbed the intruder several times. The intruder was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The family said it does not know the intruder, and said he was acting erratically. The woman said the men in the house were only protecting their loved ones.

"They defended themselves, did what they had to do to protect us because I have a 3-year old brother," she said.
