CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The CCISD honored some of its top educators this afternoon.

The district announced the winners of this year's primary and secondary teacher of the year honors.

Monica Garcia, a fifth grade teacher at Gloria Hicks Elementary School, was named primary teacher of the year.

And Laurel Brashears, who's in El Paso for a scholastic event, was named secondary teacher of the year.

She's a performing arts teacher at Veterans Memorial High School.

“The teachers that I work with are amazing and so I owe a lot to them,” Garcia said. “And my students are amazing, so this honor is really for them and they're going to be very excited to hear. Ha. Ha. Ha.”

Brashears is excited about her honor.

“It's, it's pretty amazing,” she said. “I'm used to watching my students get awards, pretty remarkable for me to have this opportunity.”

Both teachers will be honored with a banquet at the American Bank Center on April 15.
