CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — 15 years since they last tried making contact with spirits at the long-abandoned hotel in downtown Corpus Christi, these paranormal investigators are at it again.
The Hoover Hotel, now boarded up, hasn’t welcomed guests in some time.
Moises Salazar and his wife Melissa purchased the building two years ago. Although Moises hasn’t had any personal experiences with the paranormal, he avoids going to the area once the sun goes down.
“We do our best not being up here at night. This is actually the first for us,” Salazar said. “I’m kind of curious to know if there’s something going on here, kind of spooked out right now — being here at night.”
He gave us a tour of the area — with graffiti and holes rampant throughout.
He pointed to the many crosses scattered around with white paint.
“This is what gets me — the crosses on the windows,” Salazar said. “I don’t know what that’s about. Doesn’t sit well mentally with me for some reason.”
Ray Ewald with Corpus Christi Spook Central Paranormal said back in their 2005 investigation, they were able to pick up some electronic voice phenomenon or EVP readings, but never any audible voices.
That changed Thursday night.
“We were able to get a voice of a little girl in room 107,” Ewald said.
That voice sounded like “what,” he said.
An added oddity, the word “what” was also written on a nearby wall where the sound came from.
“The writings on the wall — they all lined up with what they were saying,” Ewald said.
Although the area looks abandoned and even off-putting at times, Ewald said the area was a welcoming one.
“I felt nothing here evil and it was just really pleasant,” he said. “There’s a lot more to investigate, maybe down the road, but I’m glad to be a part of it.”
Salazar said he plans to have a groundbreaking on the building in 2021 and to redevelop it into an apartment complex.
