This weekend kicks off the start of Spring Break, where thousands of people across the state will be visiting the Coastal Bend. However, with so much discussion surrounding COVID-19, will this virus keep visitors away?
Local businesses don't think so. KRIS 6 News spoke to several Padre Island businesses whose staff said they're still expecting large crowds, and are getting ready for visitors, but they are also making sure they stop the spread of germs.
With already three confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Texas, island businesses such as Padre Poke are continuing to take steps to ensure the safety of their employees and customers.
"(We practice) proper hand sanitation and no direct contact with the guests," said Padre Poke owner Jessica Chappell. "We sanitize our tables after people leave."
Chappell said staff isn't too worried about an outbreak, but the restaurant does have the 'coronavirus' hotline number on hand, in case of an emergency.
"If something happens here today, and I call that number, then they'll send someone out and they'll immediately let everyone know," she said.
If you are heading somewhere for Spring Break, the Nueces County Health Department has some advice.
"Know where you're going -- what's happening in those areas before you go -- so that way you're educated, and you know exactly what you could be coming in contact with," said Corpus Christi-Nueces County Health Public Health District director Annette Rodriguez.
Spring Break officially begins this weekend. The city is expected to hold a news conference Friday morning to provide more information.
