CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Update: The Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the body as 26-year-old Jose Garcia from Teague, Texas. His cause of death appears to be from drowning.
Corpus Christi Police said the body of a man has been found on a local beach.
Officers received a call just before 2:00 a.m. Thursday about a body being found on the south side of the Packery Channel, close to where a male swimmer went missing on Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency crews say three swimmers were out in the water on J.P. Luby Beach just before 5 p.m. when they began to struggle near the Packery Channel north jetty.
The Nueces Co. Emergency Services No. 2 says two female swimmers were rescued, but the third swimmer, believed to be a 26-year-old man not from the area, disappeared in the surf.
The U.S. Coast Guard, Corpus Christi Fire Department, and beach rescue were among those on the scene Wednesday.
Corpus Christi Fire Department Battalion Chief Billy Belyeu had stated he was originally hopeful the swimmer would be found alive, following reports the man had a flotation device with him when he went missing.
Officials have not yet confirmed that the body found is that of the missing swimmer.
