CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Six barges that ended up stranded on San José Island while Hurricane Harvey was ravaging the Coastal Bend have been removed from the island 30 months later.

"I got a note this morning that all the barges have now been removed from the island," said Kirby Corp.'s Director of Public and Government Affairs Matt Woodruff.

The barges mostly were empty, but residual oil and gas could have been in them. It's unclear if they made any environmental impact. The barges did, however, cause physical damage to the island.

"The teams will now commence restoration of the dunes and vegetation," Woodruff said.
