It was a very special night at the Alamo Draft House on Saturday, as a movie made in Corpus Christi held its red carpet premiere at the theater.

Rico, a movie filmed in Corpus Christi by Corpus Christi residents, had its first screening for the cast and crew Saturday night. The film took the crew about a year to wrap up, and the producer says at times the production was tense.

“I can tell you because there was a lot of times where the movie felt like it was, it felt like it was going to be canceled and we kept going, and then COVID came in, so it's been a struggle,” said actor/producer Xavier Garza.

A total of 35 people worked on the film over the course of the last year. Garza said the movie proves you don't need to go to Hollywood to make a good film.

The drafthouse will hold a small screening for the public to watch the film on Sunday Nov. 29, and it could possibly be extended beyond that.
