In response to Texas lawmakers nixing requirements for plumbers to be licensed and regulated by the State, the City of Corpus Christi says plumbers will still need a license locally.
Last week, theTexas State Board of Plumbing Examiners was dissolved by Texas lawmakers.
This will go into effect in September of 2020, but the City of Corpus Christi is seeking ways to regulate the plumbing industry locally. Until then, the Texas license will be required in Corpus Christi.
According to a press release from the city, “The City is engaging with the State to get more information on the next steps. Plumbers seeking a permit from the Development Services Department or doing work in Corpus Christi are still required to have a valid and current Texas plumbing license.”
City officials are aware that the change may affect the health and safety of the city’s residents.
“Permit requirements remain in effect that require licensing for plumbers and inspectors,” Nina Nixon-Mendez, Director of Development Services says. “The health and safety of the public must be maintained to the highest possible level. We are researching options to replace the state licensing program and remind residents and plumbing contractors that they need a valid license to operate in the City of Corpus Christi.”
