Learn to construct a ‘hoop house’ at the Learning Garden

GROW Local South Texas has some of the best hands-on educational events in the city. Join them this Sunday to learn how to construct your very own “hoop house” for your garden.
According to ecowatch.com, “A hoop house is a series of large hoops or bows—made of metal, plastic pipe or wood—covered with a layer of heavy greenhouse plastic. The plastic is stretched tight and fastened to baseboards with strips of wood, metal or wire.”
The lovely people over atThe Learning Garden at Tom Graham Park want to teach you how to construct one of these bad boys.
“A hoop house is a valuable tool for any urban garden or small farm. It allows us to keep some of the harsh summer sun out and start our fall seedlings early,” they say on their Facebook event page, “It allows us to keep some of the winter cold out and start our spring seedlings early. It also protects our starts and other materials from the heavy winds in this area that could easily damage young plants.”
The group is hoping to rebuild their current hoop house that was damaged during Hurricane Harvey.
This event is totally free and will be held from 4 pm to 7 pm. Bring your kids to participate in some children’s activities in the designated children’s area.
Don’t forget to wear close-toed shoes, gloves, and to bring a water container and some friends.
