A big change is coming to the coastal bend state veterans cemetery. It’ll soon be under new management.
The State General Land Office (GLO) wants to shift the managerial to local control.
The GLO will still provide the funds to run the cemetery; but it wants the city, the county, or both to be in charge of day-to-day operations. As well as the 14 or so employees, who will remain on the payroll.
All that was discussed at today’s county commissioners meeting.
Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales said, “So those are the next steps working with the land office, seeing how these contracts will progress working with our partners with the city to see how they see the best operations going forward, remember it’s all about doing the best of our veterans.”
Canales plans to meet with the city manager and has already spoken with mayor Joe McComb.
No word on when a final decision will be made.
