Local Senior Still Living Independently at 102 Years Old

Posted

We’ve all heard the saying, “You’re only as old as you feel”. If you think young, you’ll act young, and staying active helps most seniors feel young.

One local senior has taken that to heart. Joyce Jarmon has surpassed the century mark and shares some words of wisdom.

Mrs. Jarmon is 102 years young and remains independent.  She still lives in her own home, the same home she raised all 6 of her children in. Later this year she’ll celebrate her 103rd birthday.

Jarmon says, growing old gracefully hasn’t always been easy, “It could be an adventure or it can be a pain. But more than likely it would be a combination of both.”

As you can imagine she’s had experiences of a life time traveling the world and has the momentos to prove it. Despite her age there are still some places she’d like to visit.

Jarmon says, “I haven’t been to Africa, I haven’t been to India and I haven’t been to Japan.”

She spent the majority of her career with the Nueces County 148th Distrct Court and worked there until she was in her 80’s. Jarmon now keeps physically active through excersise and mentally sharp through her routines. At 102 she’s quite the computer savy senior, “I’m on Facebook and email and I keep intouch with my friends.”

She’s lived long enough to say goodbye to family, friends and two of her children. Jarmon is the last remaining living member on her dads side of the family. The walls of her home are filled with memories of loved ones. She credits being active and involved and making new memories for staying young. According to Jarmon, “Keep in touch with your friends and keep intouch with your activities. If possible stay independent.”

She does receive some help from Visiting Angels Corpus Christi, which provides in-home Senior Assistance and helps with cleaning, grocery shopping and day to day tasks Mrs. Jarmon physically can’t do. Jarmon advises seniors who want to remain young and independent to eat healthy and never miss a doctors appointment, “Just keep moving and keep intersted in what’s going on in the world and if you want to run your own life you have to put your foot down and do it. Just keep up with living!”

Some key advice to live by, by someone who knows a thing or two about growing old gracefully.
