The Port of Corpus Christi held a groundbreaking ceremony today to celebrate the beginning of construction on a new administration building.
The new, $25 million facility will be located next to the Ortiz Center on the ship channel.
The port has been in its current facility for 57 years, and says growth in staff and operations are what have prompted the move.
“The buildings we’re in are certainly old,” says Port CEO Sean Strawbridge. “They’re ineffectual right now for what we’ve become as the fourth largest port in the country.”
Strawbridge says the location of the new facility is part of the city’s long-term plan to develop the SEA District.
Construction on the building should be complete by the end of 2020.
