Are you on the job hunt? And maybe thinking about becoming a firefighter?

Listen up…

The Nueces County Emergency Services District No. 2 in Flour Bluff is accepting applications for firefighters and EMTs.

They started taking applications on March 22, and they will continue to accept applications until the positions are filled.

Putting out fires is a tough job, but somebody has to do it, and if that person is you, the Nueces County Emergency Services District No. 2 is hiring.

“We are looking for Firefighter Paramedics, Firefighter EMTs, and a kind of unusual requirement, we are looking for good swimmers,” said Flour Bluff ESD Fire Chief Dale Scott.

Yes, you heard Scott correctly, his department is looking for strong swimmers.

“Our water rescue team is very active, and it is very important that they be very good swimmers,” Scott said. “And we will send them to get swiftwater training level 1, 2, and open water training. Thirty percent of our calls are water rescues or water-related emergencies,” said Scott.

Scott says they are hiring recruits and hoping women and minorities are among those who apply. Adding diversity will better allow the department to protect the community they serve.

“Pretty much all the departments are being asked to do more with fewer people, so our guys have to wear many hats,” Scott said. “You may be doing structure fires one day, auto extraction later in the day, and you may be doing a water rescue during the evening. You have to wear many hats and expect to train 4-5 hours per day.”

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, and there is no cut-off age.

“You have to have your certification through the Texas Commission Fire Protection for basic firefighter.,” Scott said. “If you are interested in a driver operator, then you need the same certification through the Texas Commission Fire Protection Driver Operator. You also have to have at least an EMT or Paramedic with Texas Department of State Health Services.”

Nueces County Emergency Services District No. 2 is located in Corpus Christi, has 11 full-time employees, and six  volunteers to help provide fire, water rescue and EMS services to Flour Bluff, Padre Island and unincorporated areas of Nueces and Kleberg County.

The department makes about 250-280 calls a year which average about 20 calls a month.
