The Corpus Christi Fire Department has released drone video from yesterday’s grain elevator fire.

On Monday, fire crews spent most of the day monitoring a silo at the Interstate Grain Company near Up River Road, after grain dust inside the silo began to smolder.

Employees were evacuated and rail traffic was halted in the area as crews worked to contain and extinguish the smoldering grain.

The location of the silo, along with the dangerous explosive potential of grain dust prompted firefighters to take extra precautions at the scene.

“We ended up having to call a two alarm fire due to the fact that there’s a long supply line out here,” said CCFD Battalion Chief Billy Belyew, “There aren’t that many hydrants to it, and it takes a lot of supply hoses to take water from one place to another.”

Plant officials say a machine bearing failed then overheated, causing the grain dust to begin smoldering.
