It’s day 26 of the government shutdown, which means many federal workers are still without a paycheck.

But, places around town are lending a helping hand and giving discounts or free meals for government workers.

Scuttlebutt’s Seafood Bar and Grill on the Island, is offering a free catfish basket meal to any U.S. Coast Guard member.

“We appreciate everything they do and everything they stand for,” Scuttlebutt’s marketing director Drew Hicks said. “And we’d love to see more of them come in and get their free catfish dinner.”

Mesquite St.  Pizza and Pasta Co. are offering a $1 slice of pizza for government workers and their families.

“Give them a slice of pizza and maybe they can sit here and relax and just, ya know, hang out for a little while and maybe it’ll make their day a little brighter,” owner Brandon Gonzalez said.
