With gas prices at their lowest in recent years, many people are stocking up and storing the fuel. However, that may not be a wise idea.
Local gas station owner James Mathis says gasoline can be stored for about six months before it starts to break down.
Mathis says old gas could be bad for the engine and may even void the warranty of the vehicle.
“With all the modern, direct injection and everything else, it’s bad news for the new cars,” Mathis said. “It’s better just to use it as you normally would and go from there.”
Mathis says it’s also dangerous to store large quantities of gasoline, but if it is stored, it should be in a metal container and stored in an area with plenty of ventilation.
