Americans will soon be able to check hospital websites for a price list of items and services they provide.

This new order begins on January 1, 2019, when a federal rule requiring hospital transparency goes into effect. The goal is to allow consumers to know the costs of procedures and treatment before seeking medical help.

KRIS 6 News looked into how local hospital chains will keep patients informed.

In a statement from CHRISTUS Spohn Health Systems, one of the largest local hospital chains, a spokesperson said:

The Mission of CHRISTUS Spohn is to extend our healing ministry to every patient, which means providing care that is accessible to all. It is our goal every day to offer affordable costs and the highest quality of care in our communities. That is why we regularly examine ways to make care more affordable and more accessible. We remain dedicated to helping our patients understand the complexities of their insurance coverage, their out-of-pocket costs and the quality of the services we are privileged to provide them.”

CHRISTUS Spohn will post listings on its website for patients to review.

There will also be a toll-free phone number for patients who want to call and speak to a representative if they have additional questions. That phone number is (361) 881-3110.
