After barricading himself in a room for more than two hours, a man wanted for aggravated robbery surrendered to police.

A man is in police custody tonight after engaging officers in a standoff that lasted more than two hours.

According to the Corpus Christi Police Department, police arrived at the Red Roof Inn on SPID near Nile just after four this afternoon. They were following up on leads about a suspect wanted on two counts of aggravated robbery.

When officers tried to make contact with him, he retreated to a room on the top floor of the motel and barricaded himself inside. The officers who were already on the scene did not attempt to enter the room at that time. Instead, they took a cautious approach, evacuating the hotel and surrounding area and waiting for back-up to arrive because of the suspect’s alleged crimes.

During the standoff, Corpus Christi police evacuated the surrounding area as a precaution.

“It was unknown if he had any weapons in his possession because he was known to have two active aggravated robbery warrants,” CCPD Officer Gena Pena explained. “And so because of that, they didn’t want to go in until they had … the hostage negotiation team and SWAT on hand.”

She said once negotiators arrived, they started talking with the suspect and convinced him to come out of the room around 6:15 p.m.

The unidentified man was taken into custody without any further incident. There were no injuries to himself or any officers. For now, Pena said the man is only facing the two outstanding charges of aggravated robbery.
