A vehicle fire in a downtown parking garage had firefighters with the Corpus Christi Fire Department busy this morning.

The call came in around 4:30 a.m. on the 800 block of Water Street. Crews initially weren’t sure if it was a downtown building or another structure on fire, so several units were dispatched to investigate, according to Capt. Jeff Durrwachter with the CCFD.

When firefighters found the car several floors up in the parking garage near the Omni Hotel, they quickly had the flames out.

No other vehicles were damaged in the fire and no injuries were reported.

The car is a total loss.

“We are not really worried about the structure, in that sort of situation usually you’re worried about more cars on fire or possibly people, so fortunately nothing happened like that,” Durrwachter said.

Investigators are now trying to find the owner of the car and will continue looking into the cause of the fire. They are checking “every avenue from accidental to malicious.”
