Danette Delgado, a Navy veteran and a school teacher in Corpus Christi, has had a hard time getting herself around.

Delgado has struggled with transportation because she’s been helping her family

“This past year and a half has been like no car, all ride sharing,” Delgado said.

But today that all changed. Progressive Insurance and Caliber Collision of Corpus Christi teamed up for the foundation Keys to Progress, a group that rewards free cars to veterans.

Delgado, who had fallen into financial trouble taking care of her sick father, was the obvious choice.

“Ms.Delgado has served our country and served it very well,” Joshua Carpenter, VP of operations for Caliber Collisions in Central and South Texas said. “She had fallen into hard times and this is really helping her get rhythm back in her life.”

Delgado says that she appreciates the local companies supporting veterans.

“Sometimes people forget about us, they do,” Delgado said. “It’s awesome to know that these companies still want to help us veterans.”

And now with her new car, she has big plans.

“We’re gonna go to the beach,” Delgado said. “It’s Veterans weekend, I’m off Monday, We’re going to the beach.”

The foundation has given 500 cars to worthy candidates since its creation.
