Firefighters were called out to a three-story building after a passerby saw smoke coming from the third floor.

Emergency crews arrived at a building near the Furman Avenue and South Carancahua intersection just before 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered the fire broke out on the first floor and quickly put it out.  Investigators suspect the fire wasn’t an accident.

Battalion Chief Robin McGill, with the Corpus Christi Fire Department, said, “This is a vacant building that nobody is supposed to be staying in so there are no utilities. It had to be started by somebody.”

According to police, the homeless often try to get into the building.
