Following President Donald Trump’s recent visit to Houston, Congressman Michael Cloud had the opportunity to fly aboard Air Force One on the return trip to Washington and speak to the president about the Port of Corpus Christi.

Cloud says the conversation focused on the need to get funding and authorization for the Army Corps of Engineers to complete a dredging project at the port.

“Right now, it’s vital that we expand our capabilities. We are producing more oil than we can get out as a nation,” Cloud said. “The Corpus Christi Port serves as the spigot for oil production in our nation and we need a bigger spigot.”

Cloud says the project, which is expected to cost $378 million over the next three years, is important not just economically, but also impacts the nation’s standing on the world stage.

“Being able to provide oil for our allies, as opposed to those nations who don’t have our best interest in mind, will certainly strengthen our stance in the geopolitical stand, as well as will help our economy thrive even more,” Cloud said.

Following the meeting, Cloud said the president was receptive and positive about supporting the needs of the city and the port.

“The president is very much a ‘let’s get it done’ kind of guy”, Cloud said.”He was very responsive and enthusiastic about seeing the work here move forward.”
