Melani Escobar has been teaching at Los Encinos Elementary for 10 years. She says preparation is the key to student success.

Her bumble bee themed classroom hopefully will have her third graders buzzing for education.

Just a few hallways down, Celeste Trevino is making Mickey Mouse decorations in her classroom.  Her bilingual Pre-Kindergarten class was developed by her imagination. She plans to pass that along to her students.

Escobar says she uses her own money for pencils, notebooks, and her homemade class library. She says she buys books from Half Price Books so her students can have a more extensive reading selection.

Trevino says she spends her own money for decorations, materials, and crafts.

Both teachers say they do this for the students because some can’t afford the materials.

Spending the extra money doesn’t matter, these veteran teachers say. It helps make their students feel more comfortable in their classrooms.

And to see children learning makes it worthwhile.

It’s part of their passion for educating their students.
