Giving kids the basic necessities to start school on the right foot, that’s the goal of Operation Supply Our Students.

KRIS 6, The United Way of the Coastal Bend and H-E-B have been teaming up for over two decades to collect school supplies for area elementary school kids who need.

Operation SOS

School supplies are not cheap and many kiddos will show up on the first day of school not ready to start learning because they don’t have the supplies they need.

Basic supplies; paper, notebooks, pencils, glue, scissors or folders.

So, how many children are we talking about helping? 45,000 students in 37 school districts in a 10 county area here in the Coastal Bend.

The children are picked if they receive a free or reduced lunch at their school.

Last year, 10,000 kids were given basic school supplies thanks to you and Operation SOS.

“So many families don’t have a lot of money and we just try to do everything we can, with the publics help, to give them some assistance” says Libby Averyt with the United Way of The Coastal Bend.

So how about helping this great cause? There are several different ways.

1) At any HEB, you can buy a ready to go brown paper bag filled with supplies for under $6.00 (just ask for it at the check out)

2) Text SOS to 91999

3) At any HEB, when you’re at the check out counter, pull a $1, $3 or $5 coupon and give it to the cashier. The money will go to SOS. (the tear pads will be available until mid August)

4) Make a cash donation at the following HEB’s this week:

Tuesday July31 – HEB Moore Plaza

Wednesday Aug 1 – HEB Roberts @ Alameda

Thursday Aug 2 – HEB Portland

Friday Aug 3 – HEB Plus Saratoga

By the way, every bit of money collected goes straight to buying school supplies. Thank you for your help!
