CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Islander Clean Up is something the students have been doing on their own every semester since 2011.

This year, in order to get everyone in the school spirit, they decided to make their cleanup the same week as Homecoming.

The group started with about 100 students and has now grown to over 400 participants.

The students start at the heart of their campus, and clean between buildings, the University Beach, and even the bridge at the entrance of the University.

Students who volunteered said they felt it was important to begin their homecoming week by taking pride in their campus first.

"The fact that we're all coming out on our weekend when we don't have to to take care of our home,

means that we're all really passionate about this and we all really want to take care of the place that we love," said TAMUCC Student Volunteer, Madison Hightower.

For the first event of homecoming week students will participate in a canned food competition, donating all food to Izzy's pantry - which feeds students for free.

Other events for the Islanders Homecoming Week include a student versus faculty basketball game, a block party, men and women's basketball games, a homecoming honors banquet, and a lighting of the islander "I".
