CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — It was a busy day at the voter registrar's office.

Today was the deadline to register to vote in the upcoming election.

The final numbers aren't in just yet. But the registrar's office tells us so far, the number of people who have registered for this election has already passed the total number for the 2016 vote.

That was when we had our most recent presidential election and 204,000 Nueces County residents registered for that election.

As of this morning, this year’s total was more than 208,000.

“Well your vote counts and it's really gonna be a tight race this year,” said Travis Werner of Registered to Vote.”I think everyone needs to vote. Not only at your local level, but at the highest level, it’s the presidency.”

The opportunity is important for first-time voter Frank Evans.

“Because this is the most important election that I can remember in my lifetime,” Evans said. “And if everybody doesn't get out and vote, it could be a tragedy.”

Early voting begins next Tuesday, Oct. 13.

The early voting period will run until Oct. 30.

And general election day is Nov. 3.
