CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Nueces County saw a record number of people show up for early voting as more than 52% of the county's registered voters have already cast their ballot.

KRIS 6 News political analyst Dr. David Smith says that we are seeing voters becoming more invested in this year' election by attending rallies and meetings.

Smith also said we are seeing new voters that have not particularly chosen a party, a candidate or have sat out previous elections.

“We are seeing those individuals come online in this election cycle and not just in Nueces County and Corpus Christi, but also around the state and nation as well ," said Smith, a Sam Houston State University political science professor.

Voters at the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center on McArdle continue to be one of the city's busiest polling locations.

"I brought my best friend and we are going to be fine,” said Ame Ferguson and Tracie Brewer, who were at the polls voting.

Other voters say the wait is worth the time investment.

“So it’s been a long wait but it’s been worth it you know I still gotta vote either way," voter Arnold Espinosa said. "Whatever it takes, I gotta make sure I get my vote in."

“This election is very, very, very important to me and I felt that I just needed to get it done the first day,” voter Laurette Escobar said.

Voters at Nueces County Courthouse had a variety of reasons why they were voting early.

“A lot of people showed out for the Obama election and we need to do so for every election," early voter Chris Johnson said. "It's very important that we turn out on every election."

“It’s very important to exercise your right to vote whether you think it matters or not, it will make a difference,” said early voter Ashley Vnitez.

Polls will be open on Election Day across Nueces County from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Watch KRIS6 News for coverage all day on the local, state, and national races.
