CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — With most of area high school athletic facilities closed due to COVID-19, some high school football players are scrambling to find places to work out during the summer.

At the Turf Sports Complex, players can stay in shape and develop their games.

"Stand on your toes and it's pop, pop.”

"A lot of athletes are sitting at home on the couch and through our seven-on-seven and consistent training, a lot of athletes have been turning it around and getting prepped up,” said Turf Sports Complex owner Gerald Johnson.

With two-a-day workouts around the corner on Aug. 3, it will be here before you know it. Many high school football players are trying to get in shape because they know when that day comes, they have to be ready to go.

At the Turf Sports Complex, between 200 and 300 athletes are working out every week.

“Chop, chop, chop now get inside.”

The turf allows athletes to keep up their preparations for the upcoming season.

"It's good because if you want to play on Friday nights, this is what you have to do,” said Luke Johnson of Veterans Memorial High School. “Have to be out here every day.”

Adam Martinez of Flour Bluff High School says the turf will benefit all players who participate.

“It's been really important to come up here and show everyone that you are one the one,” Martinez said. “Trying to put in the work and get that position you want.”

Working at the Turf Sports Complex provides a better environment for workouts than others that are found, Johnson said.

"You can go to a park, but it's not going to be as controlled when it's opened to the public,” Johnson said. “Here we are able to control it a little bit more in terms of how many athletes are in a session and keeping them in groups and keeping the workouts spread out among the field.

So expect to see many of these young men in uniform representing their schools under the bright lights starting next month.
